Free AI Chatbots for Websites

Six platforms offer a free AI chatbot plan. The quotas differ by a factor of seven, and two of them delete your chatbot while you are not looking.

All vendor pricing read first-party in August 2026.

What is the best free AI chatbot for a website?

Of the platforms we checked in August 2026, WhisperChat has the largest free quota at 150 customer questions a month with no expiry. Chatbase gives 50 message credits but deletes agents after 14 days of inactivity, DocsBot gives 100 AI credits with a 30-day bot lifetime, and Wonderchat gives 20 credits. SiteGPT, Botsonic, CustomGPT and Kommunicate have no free plan — only trials of 7 to 30 days.

Crisp and Tidio are a different kind of free

Their free plans give you a chat widget and a shared inbox where your team answers customers by hand — the AI is metered separately and is not included. Crisp’s free tier includes no AI credits at all, and Tidio’s Lyro allowance is a one-off bundle on paid plans. If what you want is free AI answering, those two do not provide it. If what you want is free live chat, they are the best options on this table and the AI-only tools do not compete.

The expiry rules matter more than the quotas

Two of these free plans quietly remove your work. Chatbase’s pricing page states that AI agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity. DocsBot’s free tier carries a 30-day bot lifetime.

Neither is unreasonable — free infrastructure costs the vendor money, and dormant bots are the obvious thing to reclaim. But it changes what the free plan is for. A free plan with an inactivity timer is an extended trial: useful for evaluating, not for running.

If your plan is to set up a chatbot on a low-traffic site and leave it there, check the expiry terms before the quota. A 50-credit plan that persists is worth more than a 100-credit plan that vanishes.

What free plans can and cannot tell you

What a free plan is genuinely good for

Finding out whether your content is good enough. Most chatbot disappointments are not model failures — they are content failures, where the site never actually documented the answer. Training a free chatbot on your real pages and asking it your twenty most common customer questions surfaces that in an afternoon, and the finding is useful whichever product you end up buying.

What a free plan cannot tell you

Whether it holds up at volume. A 150-question quota does not exercise rate limits, concurrency, or the analytics you would rely on to improve the bot. It also will not include the features most often gated: lead capture, escalation routing, analytics dashboards, and API access are typically paid-tier features, WhisperChat included.

Free plan or free trial?

A trial gives you the full product for a fixed window — SiteGPT 7 days, Botsonic 7 days, CustomGPT 7 days with a card, Intercom 14 days without one, Crisp 14 days, Kommunicate 30 days without a card. That answers "does the whole product work for us". A free plan answers "does this deflect our questions over a normal month". They are different questions and the second one usually matters more.

What to watch in the quota unit

A "credit" is not a question. Wonderchat publishes the ratio — roughly five credits per resolution — so its 20 free credits are about 10 resolved conversations. Dante AI’s credits vary by model, from 1 credit for a light model to 5 for a mid-tier one. A 100-credit free plan could be 100 answers or 20, and only one vendor tells you which.

How to get a useful result from a free plan

Write down your twenty most common customer questions first, before you set anything up. Take them from your inbox, not from memory — the questions teams think they get and the questions they actually get differ more than expected.

Train the chatbot on the pages that should answer those questions, then ask all twenty and score each answer as correct, incomplete, or wrong. That takes about an hour and produces a number you can compare across products.

Anything the chatbot got wrong is usually a gap in your content rather than the tool. Fixing those pages improves your search rankings and your human support at the same time, so the exercise pays for itself even if you never buy a chatbot.

Then leave it running on the site for a month if the plan allows it. Real visitor questions are different from the ones you predicted, and that difference is the whole point of not stopping at a 7-day trial.

Start on the free plan

WhisperChat’s free plan covers 150 customer questions a month on one website, with no expiry and no inactivity timer, so you can leave it running long enough to judge it on real conversations.

FAQ

Is there a genuinely free AI chatbot for websites?

Yes. WhisperChat offers 150 customer questions a month on one chatbot with no expiry. Chatbase, DocsBot, Dante AI and Wonderchat also have free plans with smaller quotas, and Crisp and Tidio offer free live chat with the AI metered separately. Checked August 2026.

Which free AI chatbot plan has the highest limit?

Among AI-answering plans, WhisperChat at 150 questions a month. DocsBot gives 100 AI credits, Dante AI 100 credits, Chatbase 50 message credits, and Wonderchat 20 credits. Credits and questions are not the same unit, so compare the definitions as well as the numbers.

Do free AI chatbot plans expire?

Some do. Chatbase’s pricing page states that AI agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity, and DocsBot’s free tier has a 30-day bot lifetime. WhisperChat’s free plan has no expiry or inactivity rule. Check this before the quota if you intend to leave a chatbot running.

What is missing from a free chatbot plan?

Usually the features that make it operationally useful: lead capture, escalation routing, analytics dashboards, and API access are typically paid-tier features. On WhisperChat those start at $49 a month. Free plans also carry vendor branding, and removing it is a paid feature everywhere.

Which platforms have no free plan at all?

SiteGPT, Botsonic, CustomGPT, and Kommunicate offer trials rather than free plans — 7 days for the first three, with CustomGPT requiring a card, and 30 days for Kommunicate without one. Intercom offers a 14-day trial with no card required. Checked August 2026.

Where the numbers come from

Every competitor price, plan limit, and quota on this page was read from that vendor’s own public pricing page or documentation on the date shown above. Where a vendor does not publish a figure, this page says so rather than estimating one.

What we have not done

We have not run a hands-on trial of the competing products, and we do not claim to have. This page compares published capabilities and published pricing. Anything that would require using the product to know — answer quality, support responsiveness, reliability — is outside what we can honestly assess here.

How we decide who wins a row

A row goes to the product whose published information supports it. Where a competitor is stronger than WhisperChat, the page says so. Where a competitor costs less than WhisperChat at a given volume, the page shows both numbers.

What we do about stale prices

AI chatbot pricing changes often. Each page shows the month its competitor pricing was checked. If that date is more than a few months old, check the vendor’s pricing page before making a decision on it.
