A step-by-step guide. Free plan no payment needed to follow along.

## How do you add an AI chatbot to your website?

Sign up for a free WhisperChat account, give it your website address and any PDFs, Word files or FAQs, and let it train for a few minutes. Ask it a few test questions, pick your colours and welcome message, then paste one short code snippet into your site (or use the WordPress plugin or Odoo app). For a small site, WhisperChat says the whole thing usually takes under 10 minutes.

Last reviewed 22 October 2026 · vendor pricing checked 22 October 2026

## What do you need before you start?

Not much. You don’t need to code and you don’t need a credit card for the free plan. Have these ready:

- Your website address. The chatbot reads your pages to learn what you sell and how you work.
- Any documents customers ask about. Price lists, policies, manuals, menus. PDF, Word (DOCX) and plain text (TXT) files all work.
- Your 10 most asked questions. Think about what’s in your inbox every week: opening hours, delivery times, refunds.
- A way to edit your site. For WordPress, you need permission to install plugins. For other sites, you need to be able to paste code into the page footer.

### Which plan should you start on?

Start free. The Free plan is permanent, not a trial. It gives you 1 chatbot on 1 website and 150 customer questions a month. Once you pass 150, it drops to 5 replies a day until your allowance resets. If you need more, Standard is $49 a month for about 5,000 questions and adds lead capture and analytics. You can switch plans any time. See /pricing for the full list.

    ### Sign up for free

    About 1 minute

Go to whisperchat.ai and click Start free. Create your account with Google or your email. You don’t need a card.

Once you’re in, create your first chatbot and give it a name. Pick a name your customers will see, like “Ask Bella’s Bakery”. You can change it later.

2. 2

    ### Add your content

    About 3 minutes

This is where your chatbot learns about your business. It only answers from what you give it, so this step matters most. Open your chatbot’s Sources screen and add any mix of these:

A good first mix: your website URL plus your top 10 questions and answers. On a paid plan, add them as Q&A pairs. On Free, put them in a TXT file and upload it. You can add more later.

    What you add

    What it’s good for

    How

    Website URL

Your main pages: services, about, contact, shipping

Type your homepage address, or import your sitemap.xml. WhisperChat reads (crawls) your pages.

    PDF

    Brochures, menus, manuals, price lists

    Upload the file

    DOCX (Word)

Policies, how-to docs, staff notes you’re happy to share

    Upload the file

Plain notes or exports from other tools

    Upload the file

Anything not on your site yet, like holiday hours

Paste it into the text box (paid plans)

The exact answers you want for common questions

Type a question and its answer (paid plans)

3. 3

    ### Train your chatbot

    A few minutes, hands off

Start training, and WhisperChat processes everything you added. It usually takes a few minutes. Go make a coffee.

One thing to know: retraining is manual. If you change your website or prices later, come back and train again. The chatbot won’t pick up changes on its own. (The one exception is Shopify products, which sync automatically. See below.)

    whisperchat.ai/chatbot

![Training runs on its own and shows its progress as it goes.](https://www.whisperchat.ai/_next/image?url=%2Fguides%2Fadd-ai-chatbot-to-website%2F04-training.png&w=3840&q=75)

Training runs on its own and shows its progress as it goes.

4. 4

    ### Test the answers

    About 2 minutes

Before anyone else sees it, chat with your bot yourself. Ask it:

    - 3 questions you know are on your website
    - 2 questions from your top-10 list, worded differently
    - 1 question it shouldn’t know, like “What’s the CEO’s home address?”

Good answers should be correct and short. For the last one, it should say it doesn’t know, not make something up. Every answer gets a confidence score in your dashboard, so you can see when the bot is sure and when it’s guessing. You can also choose to show it to visitors.

If an answer is wrong, the fix is almost always in your content. Add the right answer (a Q&A pair on paid plans, or a line in your TXT file on Free) and train again.

    ### Make it look like yours

    About 2 minutes

Open your chatbot’s Settings. Here you can set:

    - The chatbot’s name
    - Colours to match your brand
    - Welcome suggestions, the starter questions visitors can tap
    - Behaviour instructions, like “Keep answers under 3 sentences” or “Always suggest calling us for custom orders”

You can also limit it to certain pages (Allowed Pages, one URL or path per line) and to your own domains (domain restrictions).

On the Free plan, the widget shows “Powered by WhisperChat”. Removing it is included on the Scale plan, or a $300 add-on on other paid plans. See /pricing for details.

## Install steps for each platform

### Any website: paste the embed script

This works on almost any site that lets you add code.

1. On the Deploy page, open Embed ChatBot and copy your embed script.
2. In your website editor, find the place to add custom code to the footer. In Webflow, for example, it’s under your project settings, Custom Code, Footer Code.
3. Paste the script just before the closing </body> tag, then save and publish.
4. Open your site in a private window. The chat bubble should appear in the corner.

Copy the embed script and paste it into your site’s footer.

### WordPress: use the plugin

You need WordPress 5.2 or newer and PHP 7.2 or newer. WordPress.com’s free and lower plans don’t allow plugins, so use the embed method there if your plan allows custom code.

1. In WhisperChat, on the Deploy page, press Manage on the WordPress card and copy the Bot ID.
2. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New, search for “WhisperChat”, install it and press Activate.
3. Go to Settings → WhisperChat. Tick the box that turns the chatbot on and paste your Bot ID with no extra spaces.
4. Choose where it shows: your public site, the WordPress admin, or both.
5. Save. If you use a caching plugin, clear its cache, then open your site in a new tab.

Settings → WhisperChat: tick enable, paste your Bot ID and pick where it shows.

### Odoo: use the Odoo app

The app is called AI Chatbot | Lead Generation Chatbot (technical name odoo\_gpt\_chat) by Terabits Technolab, the company behind WhisperChat. WhisperChat’s docs list Odoo 14.0 to 19.0, on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise. You need the CRM app installed, and your Odoo site must be reachable over public HTTPS.

1. In Odoo, open Apps, find the app above and install it.
2. In WhisperChat, copy your Bot ID from the Deploy page.
3. In Odoo, open the WhisperChat configuration settings, paste the Bot ID and save.
4. Back on the WhisperChat Deploy page, open the Odoo ERP card, turn it on and enter your Odoo address, like https://your-company.odoo.com (nothing after the .com).
5. Only if your server runs several databases: tick “I have multiple databases on my Odoo server”, type the database name, and ask whoever runs your server to add server\_wide\_modules = base,web,odoo\_gpt\_chat to the Odoo config file.
6. Give the chatbot’s Odoo user access to CRM and Discuss.
7. Test it: chat with the bot and fill in a name and email in the lead form. The lead should show up in your Odoo CRM within a few seconds.

See the Odoo guides at /odoo for Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise.

### Shopify: chat bubble plus product sync

Yes, WhisperChat works with Shopify, but there’s no Shopify app to install. It’s two separate jobs.

1\. Show the chat bubble on your store. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Edit code, open theme.liquid, and paste the embed script just before the closing </body> tag. Save, then open your store in a private window.

2\. Teach it your products (optional, recommended). This keeps product answers up to date on their own:

1. On the WhisperChat Deploy page, click Connect on the Shopify card. Enter your store domain and click Continue.
2. Copy the webhook link WhisperChat gives you. Keep it private.
3. In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Notifications → Webhooks and click Create webhook. Do this 3 times, once each for products/create, products/update and products/delete. Set the format to JSON and paste the same WhisperChat link each time.
4. Copy the signing key shown below Shopify’s webhook list.
5. Paste it into the WhisperChat Shopify panel and click Connect store. Large catalogs can take a few minutes.
6. Edit any product in Shopify. The Webhooks delivering check should turn green within seconds.

Good to know: the first import brings in your published products, up to 10,000. The bot can say whether something is in stock, and per variant it knows the price and SKU. It can’t see orders or customers, so it can’t track orders.

whisperchat.ai/chatbot

Click Connect on the Shopify card and enter your store domain.

### Slack, Discord, Telegram, Zapier, MCP and the API

These 6 need a paid plan. Each answers from the same content you trained in Step 2.

- Slack: Create a Slack app at api.slack.com/apps, paste its bot token and Signing Secret into the Slack card on Deploy, then paste the Request URL WhisperChat gives you into Slack’s Event Subscriptions. Your team DMs the bot or @mentions it in a channel.
- Discord: Create an app in the Discord Developer Portal, paste its bot token and Public Key into the Discord card on Deploy, then paste the Interactions Endpoint URL back into Discord and invite the bot. Members ask with a slash command, /ask by default.
- Telegram: Send /newbot to @BotFather, then paste the token it gives you into the Telegram card on Deploy and press Connect Telegram. WhisperChat sets up the rest. People chat with it directly, or use /ask in groups.
- Zapier: Add the WhisperChat app in Zapier, sign in and pick your chatbot. Use New Lead to send leads to your CRM or a sheet, or Ask Chatbot to ask it questions from any Zap.
- MCP server: In Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client, add https://www.whisperchat.ai/mcp as a custom connector, then sign in to WhisperChat and approve. No API key needed. You can then create, train and query your chatbots from there.
- REST API: Create a key in the dashboard under API token, then send it as a bearer token to https://api.whisperchat.ai/v1. Use it to query a chatbot, manage knowledge sources and read conversations from your own code.

## How do you get better answers?

Your chatbot is only as good as what you feed it. These habits make the biggest difference:

- Start with your top 10 questions. Don’t upload everything on day one. Write clear Q&A pairs for the questions you answer most, then add more.
- Write answers the way you’d say them. Short and plain. If your FAQ page says “Delivery is 3 to 5 working days”, the bot will say that too.
- Remove old content. An out-of-date price list in a PDF will get quoted. Delete it from your sources and train again.
- Put missing facts in writing. If it’s only in your head (“we close early on bank holidays”), the bot can’t know it. Paste it as text.
- Retrain after every change. New prices, new products, new hours: train again. It’s manual, so put a reminder in your calendar.
- Use behaviour instructions. Tell it what to do when it’s unsure, like “If you don’t know, ask for their email so we can reply.”
- Watch the confidence indicator. Low-confidence answers point straight at gaps in your content.
- Read real conversations each week. On paid plans, the analytics dashboard and weekly insight emails show recurring questions and pages that confuse visitors. Fix the top one each week.
- Set up a way to reach you. On paid plans, when the bot isn’t sure it can collect the visitor’s contact details and notify your team, or offer a Cal.com booking link.

## What if something goes wrong?

Problem

Likely cause

Fix

The chat bubble doesn’t show up

The Embed ChatBot toggle is off, or your cache is showing an old page

Switch the toggle on in Deploy. Clear your caching plugin or CDN, then check in a private window.

WordPress: still no bubble

Bot ID typo, plugin not enabled, or public site option unticked

In Settings → WhisperChat, re-paste the Bot ID with no spaces, tick the enable box and the public site option

Bubble shows on some pages only

Allowed Pages or domain restrictions are set

Check both in your chatbot Settings. Your domain must be on the list if restrictions are on.

Answers are wrong or out of date

Old content in sources, or you didn’t retrain

Remove old files, add a Q&A pair with the right answer, train again

Bot says “I don’t know” too often

The info isn’t in your sources

Add it as text or a Q&A pair. Check that your website crawl picked up the right pages.

Odoo: leads aren’t arriving

Missing permissions or wrong Odoo address

Give the chatbot user CRM and Discuss access. Use your base URL only, with no path after it.

Shopify: some products missing

Drafts and unpublished products aren’t imported

Publish them to your online store. The cap is 10,000 products.

Shopify: “No webhook has arrived yet”

Webhooks only fire when a product changes

Edit any product. Check all 3 webhooks use the same link and JSON format.

Bot went quiet mid-month

You used your monthly questions (150 on Free)

It drops to 5 replies a day until your allowance resets. Buy extra credits ($7 per 1,000) or upgrade.

## Is this the right setup for you?

### It’s a good fit if

- You run a small business or SaaS site.
- Your customers ask the same questions again and again.
- You want something live today without a developer.
- You run WordPress or Odoo, which get the easiest install.

### This isn’t for you if

- You need a person to jump into the chat live, a shared support inbox, ticketing, or WhatsApp, SMS or voice. WhisperChat doesn’t do those.
- You need SOC 2 or HIPAA compliance. WhisperChat doesn’t offer it, so regulated businesses should look at a full helpdesk instead.
- You run a Shopify store that needs order tracking. The bot can’t see orders.

### How we put this together

We wrote these steps from WhisperChat’s own setup docs, its WordPress.org plugin listing and the Odoo Apps listing, all read on 22 October 2026. Where the docs don’t name a button, we describe the step instead of guessing the label. Plans and prices come from WhisperChat’s pricing page and can change, so check /pricing before you decide.

## FAQ

### Can I really add an AI chatbot in 10 minutes?

For a small site, yes. WhisperChat says setup usually takes under 10 minutes. Training takes a few minutes of that, and you don’t have to do anything while it runs. A big site or a large Shopify catalog will take longer.

### Do I need to know how to code?

No. On WordPress and Odoo you paste a Bot ID into a settings box. On other sites you copy one script and paste it into your footer settings.

### Is it really free?

Yes. The Free plan is permanent and needs no card. It covers 1 chatbot, 1 website and 150 questions a month, with “Powered by WhisperChat” shown on the widget.

### What can I train the chatbot on?

Website URLs (one by one, or all at once from your sitemap.xml) and PDF, DOCX and TXT files, on every plan. Paid plans add pasted text and Q&A pairs. Other file types, like CSV or PowerPoint, aren’t supported, so save them as PDF first. Each paid plan has a training limit counted in characters: about 4 million on Standard, 6 million on Pro and 11 million on Scale.

### Does the chatbot update when my website changes?

Not on its own. You need to retrain it after changes. Shopify products are the exception: once connected, they sync through webhooks.

### Does WhisperChat work with Shopify?

Yes. There’s no app to install. You add the chat bubble with the embed script and connect your product catalog through 3 Shopify webhooks, which keep prices, stock and descriptions current as you edit products. It can’t see orders or customer data, so it can’t track orders.

### What happens when the bot doesn’t know an answer?

It answers only from your content, so it says it doesn’t know rather than guessing, and you see a low confidence score for that answer in your dashboard. On paid plans it can collect the visitor’s name, email and phone and email them to your team, or offer a Cal.com booking link. It can’t hand the chat to a live person.

### Which tools does WhisperChat connect to?

Ten: any website, WordPress, Shopify, Odoo, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Zapier, an MCP server and a REST API. You can also share your bot as a public chat link. WordPress and the website embed work on the free plan; the rest need a paid plan. Every channel answers from the same trained content. WhisperChat doesn’t answer on email, phone, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Facebook.
