# WhisperChat vs Botpress: No-Code vs Developer-Friendly AI Chatbots

One is a finished website support bot you point at your content. The other is a platform where you build your own AI agent. Here’s how they compare on setup, channels, price and fit.

## WhisperChat or Botpress: which one is right for your website?

Pick WhisperChat if you want a support bot on your website that answers questions from your own pages and docs, with no flows to build. Plans run from $0 to $399 a month. Pick Botpress if you want to build your own AI agent with flows, code and channels like WhatsApp and voice, and you have the time or a developer to do it. Paid Botpress plans start at $150 a month, billed annually.

## How much work is setup?

This is the biggest difference between the two. WhisperChat is a finished product you point at your content. Botpress is a workshop where you build the bot yourself.

Setup step

WhisperChat

Botpress

What you start with

A ready-made website support bot

A blank agent in Botpress Studio (or a template)

Teaching it your content

Add website URLs, PDF, DOCX, TXT, plain text or Q&A pairs

Add files and pages to a Knowledge Base

Deciding how it behaves

Already set up for answering support questions

You design it: workflows made of nodes and cards, or AI-driven “autonomous” nodes

Custom logic

Not needed for the main job; API available from $49

JavaScript in “Execute Code” cards and reusable Actions

Putting it on your site

Paste one embed script (or use the WordPress plugin). It also connects to Shopify, Odoo, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Zapier, an MCP server and a REST API

Deploy the webchat widget, or connect WhatsApp, Slack and more

When it doesn’t know

Shows a confidence level, collects the visitor’s contact details and alerts your team, or offers a Cal.com booking link (lead capture from $49)

Whatever you build: hand off to a human, route to Intercom, Zendesk, HubSpot or Salesforce, and so on

Realistic time to go live

Minutes, per WhisperChat

A simple FAQ bot can be quick; a custom agent with flows and integrations can take days or weeks

Skills you need

None beyond copying a script

Comfortable with logic and flows; JavaScript helps for anything custom

Every WhisperChat channel answers from the same knowledge and shows up in the same dashboard, so you train it once and it works everywhere you’ve connected it. WordPress and the website embed work on every plan, including Free. The other integrations need a paid plan.

The main difference: Botpress reaches more places customers message you, like WhatsApp, Instagram and phone calls, while WhisperChat covers your website, your team chat and your store with less setup.

## What does each one cost?

The two tools count usage differently. WhisperChat counts questions a visitor asks. Botpress counts conversations, which it defines as any exchange with at least two messages from the end user in a billing month. So the numbers below aren’t a perfect like-for-like match.

## Quick cost check

Say your website gets about 1,000 support chats a month.

- WhisperChat Standard at $49/mo covers up to ~5,000 questions. Even if each chat has a few questions, you’d likely stay inside it.
- Botpress Plus at $150/mo (billed annually) covers 250 conversations. The other 750 would be 8 packs of 100 at $65, about $520 more, so roughly $670 a month.
- Botpress Team at $750/mo (billed annually) covers 1,500 conversations, so it fits with room to spare.

That gap is real for a plain website FAQ bot. But you’re paying Botpress for a lot more than answering questions, which is what the next section is about.

## What’s the real difference?

Think of it like furniture. WhisperChat is a chair you take out of the box and sit on. Botpress is a full woodshop. You can build a chair there, or a table, or a whole kitchen. But you have to build it.

WhisperChat does one job: it answers your website visitors’ questions using your own content. You give it your site URLs and documents, paste a script, and it starts answering. When it isn’t sure, it says so, grabs the visitor’s contact details and pings your team. You also get a dashboard that shows which questions come up again and again and which pages confuse people (from the $49 plan).

Botpress is a platform for building AI agents. In Botpress Studio you lay out workflows as connected nodes. Some nodes follow your steps exactly. Others, called autonomous nodes, let the AI decide what to do next using tools you give it. You can drop in JavaScript to call other systems or check data. Then you put the agent on webchat, WhatsApp, Slack and other channels.

## Where is Botpress better?

We’d rather be straight with you. Botpress can do a lot of things WhisperChat doesn’t try to do:

- Channels. Botpress deploys to WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger as well as webchat and Slack, with voice on Enterprise. WhisperChat covers any website, WordPress, Shopify, Odoo, Slack, Discord and Telegram, plus Zapier, an MCP server and a REST API. It doesn’t do WhatsApp or voice.
- Custom actions. A Botpress agent can book things, look up orders, update a CRM or run any step you can code. WhisperChat answers questions and hands off.
- Helpdesk hand-off. Botpress connects to Intercom, Zendesk, HubSpot and Salesforce. WhisperChat has no shared inbox, no ticketing and no live human takeover inside the chat.
- Teams and control. The Team plan adds unlimited seats, role-based access and routing. Enterprise adds an uptime SLA and a security review. WhisperChat doesn’t offer SOC 2 or HIPAA compliance.
- Unlimited agents on any paid Botpress plan.

If you need any of those, Botpress is the stronger pick.

## Is Botpress open source?

Partly. Here’s what’s actually open:

- Open (MIT licence): the main Botpress GitHub repo holds the integrations, the CLI, the SDK and the API client for Botpress Cloud. Developers can build and publish their own integrations.
- Older self-hosted version: Botpress v12 can still be downloaded and run on your own server (binary, Docker or source). It’s dual-licensed under AGPLv3 and a Botpress licence. Its docs now live on a separate v12 site since the cloud launch.
- Not described as open source: the current Botpress Cloud and Studio, which is what the pricing above pays for.

So if you want to self-host for free, you’d be using the older v12, not the current cloud product. WhisperChat isn’t open source at all. It’s a hosted service.

## How does Botpress charge for AI?

This changed in May 2026. Before, Botpress billed AI model costs separately, at the provider’s price. For workspaces created after 14 May 2026, the AI cost is bundled in:

- Every conversation includes $0.10 of AI usage, which Botpress covers.
- Plus includes $25 of AI usage and Team includes $150.
- If you get close to your AI limit, paid plans can auto-buy $10 credit top-ups, sold at cost. Unused credit carries over for up to 12 months.
- If you run out of conversations, Botpress adds packs of 100 so your bot keeps running, and warns you at 75% and 100%.

WhisperChat works more simply. You get a question allowance per month. Go over, and you upgrade or buy extra credits at $7 per 1,000.

## Do you actually need flows?

Ask yourself what you want the bot to do. If the honest answer is “answer the same 30 questions we get every week”, you don’t need a flow builder. You need a bot that reads your help pages well and knows when to pass a visitor to a human.

If the answer is “check order status, book an appointment, then update our CRM, on WhatsApp too”, you need flows and code. That’s Botpress territory.

## Which one should you pick?

Your situation

Better fit

You want a bot answering website questions today, no developer

WhisperChat

Your budget for a support bot is under $150 a month

WhisperChat

You want to try it free on one site first

Either: WhisperChat Free (150 questions) or Botpress Free (100 conversations, 3 agents)

You want to see which questions and pages confuse visitors

WhisperChat (from $49)

You need WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or voice

Botpress

The bot must take actions: look up orders, book, update a CRM

Botpress

You run Intercom, Zendesk, HubSpot or Salesforce and want hand-off there

Botpress

You need SOC 2, HIPAA, an SLA or a security review

Botpress (Enterprise)

You have developers and want to self-host or write integrations

Botpress

Choose WhisperChat if you’re a small business, a SaaS team or an agency and your main need is answering repeat questions on your website. You don’t want to learn a builder. You want a set monthly price and a clear sign when the bot isn’t sure.

Choose Botpress if your bot is part of a bigger system. You have someone who’s happy to build flows and write a bit of JavaScript, and you need more channels or real actions.

### WhisperChat isn’t for you if

You need live human takeover inside the chat, a shared inbox, WhatsApp, voice calls, or enterprise compliance. Botpress (or a full helpdesk) will serve you better.

## See it answer your website’s questions

No flows to build. Add your pages and files, paste one script, and you’re live. It’s free for 150 questions a month, no card needed.

## FAQ

### Is Botpress free?

Yes, there’s a $0 plan with 100 conversations, 3 AI agents and 3 seats. You can’t buy extra conversations on Free, so busier sites will need a paid plan. Paid plans start at $150 a month, billed annually.

### Is WhisperChat free?

Yes. The Free plan is permanent, not a trial. You get 150 questions a month on 1 chatbot and 1 website, with WhisperChat branding.

### Do I need to code to use Botpress?

Not for a simple bot. Botpress Studio is visual, and you can describe agents in plain language. For custom logic or calling other systems, JavaScript helps a lot.

### Do I need to code to use WhisperChat?

No. You add your website URLs or files and paste one script on your site. There’s a WordPress plugin too.

### Which tools does WhisperChat connect to?

Ten: any website, WordPress, Shopify, Odoo, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Zapier, an MCP server and a REST API. You can also share your bot as a public chat link. WordPress and the website embed work on the free plan; the rest need a paid plan. Every channel answers from the same trained content. WhisperChat doesn’t answer on email, phone, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Facebook.

### Is Botpress open source?

Partly. Its integrations, SDK and CLI are MIT-licensed on GitHub. The older self-hosted Botpress v12 is also available. The current cloud platform is a paid hosted service.

### What’s a cheaper Botpress alternative for a website FAQ bot?

WhisperChat Standard is $49 a month for about 5,000 questions. Botpress Plus is $150 a month (billed annually) for 250 conversations. For simple website support, WhisperChat costs less. For multi-channel agents, it isn’t a like-for-like swap.

### Can I move from WhisperChat to Botpress later?

Yes. Your source content (website pages, PDFs, FAQs) is yours, so you can load it into a Botpress Knowledge Base if you outgrow a support bot.

### Where the numbers come from

Every competitor price, plan limit, and quota on this page was read from that vendor’s own public pricing page or documentation on the date shown above. Where a vendor does not publish a figure, this page says so rather than estimating one.

### What we have not done

We have not run a hands-on trial of the competing products, and we do not claim to have. This page compares published capabilities and published pricing. Anything that would require using the product to know answer quality, support responsiveness, reliability is outside what we can honestly assess here.

### How we decide who wins a row

A row goes to the product whose published information supports it. Where a competitor is stronger than WhisperChat, the page says so. Where a competitor costs less than WhisperChat at a given volume, the page shows both numbers.

### What we do about stale prices

AI chatbot pricing changes often. Each page shows the month its competitor pricing was checked. If that date is more than a few months old, check the vendor’s pricing page before making a decision on it.

### How we put this together

We make WhisperChat, so keep that in mind as you read. We took every Botpress price, limit and feature from Botpress’s own pricing page, blog, docs and GitHub on 22 October 2026. We didn’t run a hands-on test of Botpress for this page. Both companies change their pricing, and Botpress changed its model in May 2026, so check the live pages before you decide.
