Intercom Alternative
Intercom is a full customer service platform and WhisperChat is not. This page is about when that difference is worth $0.99 per resolution plus a seat licence — and when it is not.
Intercom pricing checked August 2026. Free plan available.
What is the best Intercom alternative for a small team?
For small teams that only need website questions answered, WhisperChat is a much cheaper alternative: $49 a month flat for around 5,000 questions, against Intercom’s $29 to $132 per seat per month plus $0.99 for every Fin resolution. But Intercom is a complete support platform with a shared inbox, ticketing, and workflows. WhisperChat has none of those, so it is only an alternative if you are not using them.

What Intercom does that WhisperChat does not
Intercom is a complete customer service platform: a shared inbox, ticketing, workflows, SLAs, routing, reporting, a help centre, outbound messaging, and multi-channel support. WhisperChat is a website support chatbot. If your support team works out of Intercom’s inbox every day, WhisperChat is not a replacement and this page is not going to argue otherwise. Read on only if the question is “do we need all of that yet?”
How Intercom and Fin actually charge
Intercom’s pricing has two parts and it is worth separating them, because most cost surprises come from the second.
The first part is seats: $29 per seat per month on Essential, $85 on Advanced, and $132 on Expert. You pay this whether or not the AI answers anything.
The second part is Fin, Intercom’s AI agent, at $0.99 per outcome. Intercom defines an outcome on its own pricing page as: a customer confirms their issue is resolved, or they do not ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a workflow including handoffs. It also states that you are charged once per conversation even if Fin answers several questions in it.
That model is genuinely fair — you pay when the AI does the job. It is also linear with no ceiling, which is what makes the arithmetic below worth doing before you commit.
What Intercom’s published rates imply at volume
| Resolutions per month | Fin at $0.99 each | Plus 3 Essential seats | WhisperChat plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | $99 | $186 | Free — $0 (150/month cap) |
| 500 | $495 | $582 | Standard — $49 |
| 1,000 | $990 | $1,077 | Standard — $49 |
| 2,500 | $2,475 | $2,562 | Standard — $49 (~5,000) |
| 5,000 | $4,950 | $5,037 | Standard — $49 |
| 10,000 | $9,900 | $9,987 | Pro — $149 (~10,000) |
Assumptions behind that table — and what it does not say
The table assumes three seats on the Essential plan at $29 each, and applies Intercom’s published $0.99 per Fin outcome. Both figures come from Intercom’s pricing page, checked August 2026. It is arithmetic on published rates, not a quote, and it does not account for volume discounts we have no visibility into. More importantly: it compares two different things. Intercom’s figure buys a whole support platform staffed by humans. WhisperChat’s buys AI answers on a website. The table shows what the published rates imply at volume, and nothing more than that.
Where each product is stronger
Intercom is stronger at
- Everything a growing support organisation needs beyond answering questions: inbox, tickets, SLAs, routing, reporting, help centre.
- Fin resolving across channels and completing workflows, including handoffs, rather than only replying.
- Charging only when the AI produces an outcome — at low volume this is very buyer-friendly.
- A 14-day free trial with no card, including all features and Fin.
- Enterprise compliance, security review, and procurement processes.
- Depth of integrations with the rest of a company’s stack.
WhisperChat is stronger at
- No per-seat cost. Adding a colleague who wants to read conversations does not change your bill.
- A fixed monthly ceiling. Your cost does not move when traffic spikes.
- Cost at moderate-to-high answer volume — the table above is the whole argument.
- Time to live: paste an embed script rather than run an implementation.
- A free plan you can leave running on a low-traffic site indefinitely.
- A dedicated Odoo app, a WordPress plugin, and a Discord bot.
Questions worth answering before you switch
Are you actually using the inbox?
This is the only question that matters first. If your team answers conversations in Intercom daily, replacing it with WhisperChat removes a function nothing else in your stack covers. If Intercom is effectively running as an expensive FAQ widget with an inbox nobody opens, the cost comparison above becomes very relevant.
How many resolutions do you really have?
Check the actual number in your Intercom reporting rather than estimating. At 100 resolutions a month Fin costs $99 and the whole platform is reasonable value. At 2,500 it is roughly $2,475 a month in Fin charges alone. The shape of your decision changes completely between those two numbers, and most teams have not looked.
What replaces escalation?
WhisperChat shows a confidence indicator and routes uncertain conversations to your team by capturing the visitor’s contact and notifying you, or by handing off to a Cal.com booking link. Nobody joins the chat live. In practice teams pair it with email or a lightweight helpdesk. If you need a person in the conversation within seconds, keep Intercom.
What about ticketing and reporting?
WhisperChat has no ticketing system. Its reporting covers conversation history on every plan, and from $49 a support analytics dashboard, weekly insight emails, recurring-question insights, and confusing-page detection. That is useful for improving the chatbot. It is not a substitute for support-operations reporting.
A middle path worth considering
Switching platforms is not the only option, and for many teams it is not the best one.
If the cost problem is Fin volume rather than Intercom itself, running an AI chatbot on the public website to answer pre-sales and documentation questions — while keeping Intercom for logged-in customers and anything that needs a person — reduces the resolution count that reaches Fin. That is a smaller change with a smaller risk than a migration, and it keeps the inbox your team relies on.
This is not the recommendation that sells the most subscriptions, but it is the one that fits a lot of situations, and a comparison page that pretends otherwise is not worth reading.
Which one should you choose?
Choose WhisperChat if…
You are a small team, nobody is working out of the inbox daily, and your resolution volume has made Fin the largest line on your bill. Or you never needed a full support platform and adopted one because it was the default choice.
Choose Intercom if…
Your team answers conversations by hand, you need ticketing, workflows, SLAs, routing, or multi-channel support, you need Fin to complete workflows rather than just answer, or you have compliance and procurement requirements. At low resolution volume, paying only for outcomes is also a genuinely good deal.

Where the numbers come from
Every competitor price, plan limit, and quota on this page was read from that vendor’s own public pricing page or documentation on the date shown above. Where a vendor does not publish a figure, this page says so rather than estimating one.
What we have not done
We have not run a hands-on trial of the competing products, and we do not claim to have. This page compares published capabilities and published pricing. Anything that would require using the product to know — answer quality, support responsiveness, reliability — is outside what we can honestly assess here.
How we decide who wins a row
A row goes to the product whose published information supports it. Where a competitor is stronger than WhisperChat, the page says so. Where a competitor costs less than WhisperChat at a given volume, the page shows both numbers.
What we do about stale prices
AI chatbot pricing changes often. Each page shows the month its competitor pricing was checked. If that date is more than a few months old, check the vendor’s pricing page before making a decision on it.
